Tapping into the Halal Pharmaceutical Market: Issues and Challenges
The increasing economic power and Muslim populations globally warrant a greater understanding of halal concept. Yet, efforts to explain halal issues in medicinal production remain scant. This paper aims to explore the idea of halal pharmaceutical production process and delves into the challenges faced by the manufacturers in developing the niche market. This research embarks into a qualitative conceptual study. Data obtained were based on expert views (i.e. government officials, consultants and pharmaceutical manufacturers) derived during informal talks, semi-structured interviews and available statistics, annual reports as well as reliable articles. The study emphasised that halal pharmaceutical industry need to not only highlight the halal values in the production, yet should project and inject a wider image of Islamic values—good, clean and wholesome into the manufacturing process which would attract wider market segments.
