Halal Park 2.0: organising halal production and supply networks

Image
The halal parks that have been developed over the years were just a dedicated halal zone for halal industry & services, supported by halal certification (bodies), and government incentives. We would like to call this model Halal Park 1.0 . However, these halal parks did not provide significant synergy advantages for industries operating in these halal parks, did not deliver ground breaking innovations, and did not create new global halal brands. Halal Parks 1.0 were not designed as halal eco-systems, providing insufficient halal synergy advantages for industries. Instead, halal parks need to be designed as halal clusters in order to provide a superior halal eco-system (brand). A halal cluster is a spatial clustering of halal production chains in an industrial park or economic zone, whereby a significant part of the supply chain is geographically positioned in the halal park.    Hence, we propose the halal ecosystem of a halal park extends beyond the physical boundaries of ...

Image
Due to a large, young and fast growing Muslim demographics in combination with a substantial and fast expanding global Islamic economy, Muslim markets in the Middle East and Asia are one of the leading consumer markets today. Doing business in Muslim markets means next to food and product safety also meeting halal requirements. A series of high profile halal crises in recent years with top brands have shaken public confidence in the ability of brand owners to assure the halal integrity of halal certified products. Through social media, a single halal issue can easily snowball into a major crisis for brands on a global scale. Companies need to understand that their brand and business can be at serious risk with a halal issue and crisis.   Complexities of halal markets Muslim markets today are supplied by global supply networks, originating from different production locations with a different halal context, creating global integrated systems and a  coupling of brands . Is there a looming breakdown of global halal agri-food supply chains?

Image
The growth of the halal industry Various reports on the status of the halal industry show a continuous upwards trend of the halal industry as the demand for halal products is increasing. Key drivers behind the halal industry are the Muslim population demographics, growth of per capita income in Muslim (majority) countries, as well as growth of per capita income from Muslims in non-Muslim countries. Furthermore, we see new products and services being halal certified, expanding today’s halal industry far beyond food products only. This fast growing industry has been well received by both the Muslim world and non-Muslim countries serving these fast growing halal markets with in some cases even double digit growth figures.   The problem The world is going through more than just turbulent times, with what I would describe as a toxic cocktail of covid-19 lockdowns & related measures, rising inflation, an energy crisis in Europe, and global climate change measures reducing agriculture...

Utilizing Blockchain Technology to Enhance Halal Integrity: The Perspectives of Halal Certification Bodies

Image
Halal supply chains have inherent problems or  fl aws, namely in traceability (the ability to examine and reproduce the exact path of a product in the supply chain) and in organising product recalls; transportation and warehousing (storage) downstream compliance with halal requirements; end-to-end chain integrity (unbroken chain) from source to point of consumer purchase; different halal systems and interpretations of different markets; and lack of IT integration with supply chain partners and halal certi fi cation bodies (HCB). A series of high pro fi le halal crises in recent years involving well-known brands have shaken public con fi dence in the ability of brand owners to assure the authenticity of halal certi fi ed products. Halal blockchains pre-program the requirements of the destination market, such as halal production certi fi cate requirements, halal storage-transportation-terminal handling terms, the encoding of  ‘ halal ’  on freight documents. Furthermore, th...
